Chelsea have a need to sign a forward in January, perhaps a need they were not expecting as they continued to put faith in Alvaro Morata. Faith they now realise is not paying off.
So who are Chelsea looking to bring in? Their plan is a short term fix in January, and then a move for a ‘Morata replacement’ in the summer. Here are some names I personally know to be considered.
Even though the player himself has publicly stated he is content staying at AC Milan, and Milan themselves have denied a move will happen, this still remains a likely move. Higuain is Sarri’s first choice and although the board rejected his request to sign Higuain in the summer, it appears they are now willing to back the move – due to any deal only being on a six month loan, and will be a lot cheaper.
The Bournemouth forward remains a target for the club. However, at close to £50 million (his value according to his club), this one seems highly unlikely right now unless the player pushes for a move.
The England international has been admired and considered by Chelsea for the last few years, but Leicester City have priced him out of any move. Their stance remains the same, and Vardy himself has stated concerns that possession football may not suit his strengths. However, it is believed that he could fancy one last chance to play at one of the big clubs. This is a move that wouldn’t surprise me.
Another option put to the board by Sarri, for obvious reasons. Mertens has publicly stated his desire to link up with Sarri again. But we all know the hard stance that Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis would take here. With that said, I still don’t think it’s an impossible move, and for Chelsea would probably make the most sense out of them all due to his versatility and him being ‘ready made’ for the system.
Chelsea have once again been strongly linked with a move for Cavani. Although this hasn’t been widely talked about, I asked some questions and it appears he does remain on the Chelsea shortlist, and if the club can negotiate a deal that suits them – this is another move that wouldn’t surprise me.
Having only recently made a big money move to Everton, I see this as being near impossible. But Chelsea were VERY close to signing the Brazilian before he went to Watford, and have kept a keen eye on the player ever since. They may well make an enquiry at the least.
Having struggled with injuries this season, any move would be considered a risk, especially as West Ham won’t let him leave unless it’s a big fee. But Arnautovic wants to leave, and wants his one last shot at a top six club, so it’s likely he will push for a move in January. Anything can happen there.
Now, the sought after French international will easily be considered the best option for Chelsea, and could well move in January. However, he isn’t a centre forward. So this move would rely on Chelsea continuing to use a false nine. I believe if Fekir arrives, it will be an extra, not as the striker solution.
Manchester United have used their option to extend his contract by a year. However, the future of Martial remains very much in the balance. Can a deal be done in January? Highly unlikely. But he does remain a long term Chelsea target for the centre forward role and the club will be closely monitoring that situation.
The reports that Chelsea are considering binging back the in form and goal scoring forward from his loan at Aston Villa, are true. The option is certainly being explored.
Perhaps not the names some people hope to read linked with Chelsea, but you have to realise these will be temporary options to come in, score goals, and lead the line in the second half of the season.
