Chelsea currently have five midfielders in the squad, including an injured Loftus-Cheek. With Fabregas leaving the club for Monaco, we currently do not have a direct backup for Jorginho and Kante. But despite that, do we actually need another midfilder?
With Chelsea being linked with Striker Gonzalo Higuain, many have forgotten about the ‘problems’ we have had in the midfield. With no backup to Kante, many would say we need a player similar to Chelsea target Barella, so why have we been linked with Paredes the most?
It has been reported recently that Paredes has agreed terms with Chelsea but Chelsea are ‘too far off’ Zenit’s asking price. The Cagliari director also said today that Barella would not be leaving in this window: “We reiterate that [Barella] will stay for at least for the next six months. After that, we’ll see what happens in the summer.”
Many Chelsea fans would be happy to hear that Maurizio Sarri mentioned in a press conference that Ampadu and Hudson-Odoi would be getting a lot more game-time in the second part of the season. However, when the coach was asked whether Ethan would be able to play in the Jorignho role, he said that he would need a player who was ‘more technical’.
When we saw Ampadu play against Nottingham Forest, we expected to see him playing the deep lying playmaker role however he roamed around more in Kante’s role, and despite only training there for a couple weeks he looked extremely comfortable on and off the ball.
Paredes is a player who is very versatile in the midfield, but could be a good substitute for either Jorginho or one of the players in the Left-Centre-Midfield. When Jorginho is struggling to break down the teams who sit back, he could offer the better passing range from deep. Since Kovacic isn’t invloved in many goals, Barkley isn’t in the best of form recently and Loftus-Cheek injured Paredes could fit very nicely in our team.
It is also worth mentioning that Sarri could also try playing Kovacic in the deepest of the midfield, since playing a lot there for Inter Milan. On the other hand, with many fans looking to use our youth in the future, this signing could limit the gametime in the future for the likes of Ampadu, Mount and many other bright prospects.
Personally, Paredes seems like a great signing and if we can get him for a fee of around £30 million he could turn out to be a very important player. Chelsea will also be looking to get Higuain in as soon as possible, and with these two signings we should be looking to secure the top 4.
