Chelsea were widely reported to have initially agreed terms to sign Zenit midfielder Leandro Paredes, but allegedly pulled out due to his high fee.
It’s now been reported by a number of UK outlets, that the Chelsea hierarchy are still considering whether they’ll even sign a replacement for Cesc Fabregas, who will be a backup to Jorginho.
Some club officials feel that the Blues already have enough midfielders in the squad, and are reluctant to spend a high fee on a player who will be signed essentially as a backup.
I understand Chelsea have also considered signing Adrien Rabiot from PSG, but again his fee may put them off.
So is there any player in this current squad who can do the job of rotating with Jorginho, when the Italian is tired?
The role of ‘Regista’ is a specialised one, it literally means the orchestrator. So every move from the back goes through them, they touch the ball a lot but don’t usually hold it for too long, their job is to keep it moving.
So with that in mind, I raised a poll yesterday and the results were as follows…
Out of nearly 8,500 voters, 59% of you believe that Ethan Ampadu would be comfortable backing up Jorginho. And 25% of you would prefer Mateo Kovacic.
Ampadu may seem the obvious choice for many, as he has played in that position (not role) for Wales, and a couple of times for Chelsea. For me, I think he ‘could’ play as a regista, but I think he will only be suitable after learning the roles specifics. He’s comfortable on the ball, calm under pressure, and is a good passer, meaning to me he could definitely be trained into the role.
Maurizio Sarri has also said similar comments when questioned on using Ampadu there previously. He believes that the 18-year old could play that role, but he’s not quite ready yet.
David Luiz to me has always been a midfielder, but not a holding midfielder, I personally think he’d be a great midfielder playing a little more advanced. But that’s a different story. He is probably too comfortable and relaxed to play Jorginho’s role, but I still feel he could do it.
But just about edging it right now for me, would be Kovacic. For the reason being that he is the most press resistant, and he will be comfortable dribbling the ball out of danger. This isn’t exactly what Sarri would want, but it could work. I think he’d have to improve his passing side and learn the quick one touch movements, but I think he is just about our best option to cover Jorginho right now.
This would also allow for more game time for Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the left centre midfield position, where he is most affective. He is out injured currently, but I genuinely believe that he will help immensely with the lack of goals, and inability to break teams down.
I do believe though, that having analysed this situation, it’s clear to see why Sarri still wants the club to sign someone more specialised for that role to backup Jorginho.
