With much talk of the incident regarding Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga at Wembley many are now questioning who should be Chelsea’s club captain.

Many seem to overlook that Gary Cahill is still the club captain and when he’s not playing it (which currently he isn’t) is Cesar Azpilicueta. Many feel Cesar should have intervened on the pitch yesterday to get Kepa to go off. Instead it was David Luiz who was trying to get the situation resolved.

I don’t want to be too negative as the team put in a very good and committed performance at Wembley in the Carabao Cup Final but one of the biggest issues is that we do lack big leaders in this current Chelsea team.

We were spoilt with the fantastic leadership we had from John Terry and he captained us to much success. We’ve also had big personalities in our dressing room over recent years with many captaining their national teams. Other great Chelsea captains for me include; Ron Harris, Ray Wilkins and Dennis Wise. Unfortunately we don’t have that anymore and I feel it’s something that needs to be addressed at the club.

Many polls on twitter are suggesting Eden Hazard should be our next captain. Not for me, he’s clearly our best player but we already rely on him so much. It also pains me to say but it’s highly likely he will leave as well. Making him captain won’t make him stay in my opinion.

Despite the incident at Wembley I’d be happy for Azpilicueta to remain as captain or for Antonio Rudiger to get the armband and I also feel there’s a case to be made for David Luiz.
The twitter polls were close but again that suggests to me a bigger picture, and that is this team lacks a true captain.
