Chelsea 3-0 Dynamo Kyiv (Leg 1) – 5 Key talking points

1) Pedro masterclass

The Spaniard had a tremendous performance for the Blues tonight. He was named in the starting eleven this evening and he proved exactly why he deserves his place. 17 minutes were on the clock and Pedro took the lead confidently for the Blues. A stylish double nutmeg lead up to the goal with help off former team mate Olivier Giroud. The 31-year-old midfielder had a lively, sharp tempo to his game tonight and that was consistently shown throughout the 90 minutes. However, despite a good performance he could have had a hattrick so he did miss a few opportunities. However, towards the end of the game Pedro helped out with Callum-Hudson Odoi’s goal with a strong cross ball which fell to the feet of Ruben Loftus Cheek. The Spaniard not only had a great individual performance tonight but he also helped out the team very well collectively.

2) Willian scores a screamer of a free kick

Willian was just on the back of a great performance against Fulham at the weekend and he stepped up once again for the South West London side. 65 minutes were on the clock and Chelsea were awarded a free kick. The Brazilian stepped up for it, it was written in the stars and was meant to be. Although the free kick was quite far out and looked like a very difficult point to score from the 30-year-old managed it. It was a breath taker of a free kick and will not be forgotten by Chelsea fans in a hurry.

3) Giroud makes his 50th appearance for the Blues

Olivier Giroud made his 50th appearance for Chelsea tonight and what better way to celebrate it than to start the game and assist a goal. The Frenchmen had yet another impressive performance in this competition tonight. He was very alert and gave a good team contribution. 17 minutes in he helped the lead up to Pedro’s goal and his skill shined through with a slick flick assist.

4) Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek prove themselves once again despite not starting the game

When most Chelsea fans saw that Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek weren’t on the starting eleven team sheet tonight it was quite disappointing. The two players have shown over a period of time exactly why they deserve first team football however, Maurizio Sarri did not start them in this Europa League game. Nevertheless, in the 65th minute Barkley made way for Ruben and in the 78th minute tonight’s goal scorer Willian made way for Callum Hudson-Odoi. 82 minutes were on the clock and Ruben had a chance but it just poked over the top of the net. The midfielder was threatening and pushed to capitalise. Callum Hudson-Odoi was only on the pitch for 12 minutes and he net a goal for his team giving the Blues a 3-0 lead. The youngster took the chance and succeeded with great thanks to former team mates Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Pedro. Both of the youngsters put out impressive displays tonight with the game time they got.

5) The Blues are in a positive position going into the second leg next week

Now the Blues will head out to Ukraine next week as they take on Dynamo Kyiv again but this time in the second leg. The Blues are already holding a 3-0 advantage meaning Dynamo have also got no away goals. Therefore, it is pointing in a positive direction for Chelsea as they have the upper hand.
