Chelsea play Cardiff on Sunday in what should be an easy win. With no Chelsea fixtures happening over the last two weeks due to international break, a lot was brought up in the press conference and Sarri was questioned heavily, especially about Hudson-Odoi.
Sarri on Hudson-Odoi’s racial abuse during his time at England.
“I don’t like to speak to him about this problem because unfortunately, I can solve it. In every country there are stupid people. It is a big problem. We need to do something different, maybe stop the match for 10 mins on 1st situation”
“We need a rule, I think. We need a rule for the Premier League, but for all championships, all football. A rule that can permit us to stop the match.”
Sarri on Hudson-Odoi handling the racism.
“He is very young but I think he is really very strong. The character is really very strong. I saw him very well yesterday. I think he is strong enough.”
Sarri on Hudson-Odoi with England.
“No. I only watched 20 minutes.I had 14 players in the national teams so I had no time to watch 20 matches. So I saw the English national team for only 20-25 mins. Cal didn’t start very well for 20 mins on the right, he did well on the left”
Sarri on Hudson-Odoi’s remaining gametime for the remaining part of the season and in the future.
Last season Callum was only 17, he played 3-4 matches, this season he’s 18 and he has played 19-20 matches. So I think that the evolution is the right evolution. Probably he will play 30-35 matches next season.”
“We have to play 8 matches in 23 days, I am sure Callum will start two or three matches.”
“He has started a lot of matches, probably not in the Premier League, but that’s by chance. It is not a problem to put him in a Premier League match, he is ready. We can play with only 2 wingers, we have Hazard, Willian and Pedro”
“He is doing very well but he needs to improve more. The potential is really very high. I don’t want him to stop improving because he can become one of the most important players in Europe. He needs to improve more. The risk is he stops improving”
Sarri was asked another question on Hudson-Odoi, but forced the journalists to change topics of their questions.
Sarri on the Cardiff game.
“Unfortunately, we have to wait to see the reaction during the match. We are working well in training, but as you know, the only thing that’s important is the reaction in the match. It will be a really difficult match.”
“We need to defend very high, defend very far from our box, otherwise it will be a problem”
Sarri on the future of Hazard and Hudson-Odoi.
“I don’t know, you have two possibilites I think. You can ask Hazard or the club. I am not in charge of the market so I don’t know. Hazard in this moment is important, we need him at his top for the next two months”
“The market is closed now, so it is not important. I want him to respect his season and I don’t know if he has decided or not.”
Sarri on whether Hudson-Odoi will stay at Chelsea: “I am not able to say if he signs a new contract or not, but I think he will stay here in any case.
Sarri on Chelsea teaching top four this season.
“I think we can reach the top-four, also if we are not able to win all eight matches in a row. No [we don’t have a points target, I think we need to think match by match, we are focused only on the next match.” #CFC
In Summary, Maurizio Sarri believes Hudson-Odoi will stay ahead of this season, whether he signs a contract or not. Top four is possible but we have to win each match as it comes.
