Reece James to be handed a spot in Chelsea’s first team this summer

Chelsea are facing a transfer ban for the next two windows. They await to see if they can appeal, which would mean a freeze for this summers ban. They’re also expected to take the decision to the court of appeal.

Whatever happens with the ban, reliable source The Evening Standard are reporting that current Wigan Athletic loanee Reece James, is being considered to be part of the first team squad for next season.

The report states that James has impressed Chelsea officials on loan in the Championship this season, and they believe he will come in to replace Davide Zappacosta backing up Cesar Azpilicueta. In my view though, he will do more than back him up, I believe he is more than good enough to take his starting spot.

The 19-year old Chelsea academy graduate has been gaining ridiculous plaudits this season from those close to Wigan, and those in football generally. He is picking up Man of the Match performances most games and has already made the Championship team of the season.

He also possesses versatility, being used at centre back, right back and centre midfield at Chelsea and at Wigan this season. He literally offers everything that a modern day footballer needs in terms of technical skills and ability. But he also has that elite mentality and leadership that Chelsea are currently lacking.

People claim that we often over hype our youth players. I disagree. I believe talents like Reece James should be celebrated, supported and driven. They’re more than good enough. He’s a future captain without a doubt.
