On Wednesday Chelsea face Brighton in a rearranged Premier League fixture. The two clubs have not faced each other much over the years. In this article I’m going to take you back to a Division 2 fixture during Chelsea’s promotion winning season of 1988/89.

Freestone, Clarke, Roberts, C.Wilson, Dorigo, McLaughlin, Nicholas, Wood, Dixon, Durie, K.Wilson

Result: Chelsea 2-0 Brighton

Chelsea Goals: K.Wilson (26), Dixon

Attendance: 15,406

The Game:

Chelsea dominated the game from the start and Dixon had a great early shot saved by the goalkeeper. It was Durie who set up Kevin Wilson for the opening goal on 26 minutes slotting home from close range in front of the packed shed end.

Kerry Dixon had another great chance in the second half but shot high over the bar from close range after Graham Roberts headed the ball into his his path from a corner.

Dixon did however secure the points for Chelsea after being put through on goal by Clive Wilson. Another important three points as Chelsea went on to win the division 2 championship.

Chelsea beat Brighton 2-0 on Boxing Day last season as well. Let’s hope for a similar straight forward result on Wednesday evening.
