Ashley Cole – “Chelsea rate the youngster very highly and clearly want him to stay”

The current Derby full-back reveals what he has heard about the English youngster

Speaking before yesterday’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, legendary left-back Ashley Cole revealed how highly rated Callum Hudson-Odoi is by Chelsea and how much the club want to keep the talented youngster.

“Yeah people are talking very, very highly of the kid.”

Hudson-Odoi was subject of several transfer offers from German giants Bayern Munich during the January transfer window, with the 18-year-old being understood to have been keen on leaving Stamford Bridge and has rejected the offer of a new contract (although contract talks continue to take place between the player and the club).

But he has now started the last three league matches, including yesterday’s trip to Anfield.

“There’s a lot of talk about him leaving and people want him to stay. He’s a great asset, he’s come into the team kind of when they weren’t playing very well.”

Cole is now back in England playing for Derby County, after spending four years abroad with AS Roma and Los Angeles Galaxy

And Cole, who now plays under former Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard at Derby, admits he is a big fan of Hudson-Odoi.

“He’s been the spark around with the fans, with the players, he’s brought something different to the team.

He’s got so much to give and so much more to give.”

The former Chelsea left-back now hopes for Callum to get a regular run of games and starts until the end of the season and that he pushes on with his development as he firmly believes he has what it takes to be a star for both club and country.

“I think he needs to get a run of games and continue playing because he could be at the top.”

We all hope the same for him Ash, we all do.
