Call me old fashioned but I will always choose winning a trophy over getting in the ‘top 4’. Getting in the top 4 is great financially and does help the club attract some of the best players around the world.

I do get that but if Chelsea are not going to be able to overturn this transfer ban is there really any point in qualifying for a competition we have absolutely no chance of winning?

Sometimes the focus for many teams and fans is qualification for the Champions League and actually overlooking the thought process of going on to win it!

In 2012 I remember laughing at the likes of Spurs for desperately trying to qualify for a competition that we were doing our best to win. I’d be a hypocrite if I thought any different now.

I personally feel the Europa League reflects where we are as a club right now. Yes we have cruised at times in the competition this season but there’s absolutely no chance of us currently competing with Europe’s best.

I don’t expect success all the time but I certainly expect us to play better than what we have on the whole this season. I obviously always want Chelsea to become the best they can but I don’t think qualifying for the Champions League is the answer to all our problems.

We’ve had some fantastic moments in the Champions League over recent years but during a time of transition and hopefully nurturing and developing young players it may be too early for this team.

It baffles me that with four or five league games remaining we still have an outside chance of qualifying for the Champions League. Let’s be honest some league performances and results have been abysmal at times.

Excluding Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante our current squad screams Europa League.

We’ll be back I’m sure but for now we’re exactly where we deserve to be.
