REWIND TO 1996/97: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-2 CHELSEA

As we approach another massive weekend of Premier League football and Chelsea’s trip to Old Trafford on Sunday it’s time to revisit a classic match from years gone by.

I’ll be taking you back to the 1996/97 season.

Chelsea Team:

Hitchcock, Clarke, Duberry, Leboeuf, Petrescu, Minto, Burley, Di Matteo, Wise, Hughes, Vialli

Man United Goal: May (81)

Chelsea Goals: Duberry (31), Vialli (61)

Attendance: 55,198

The Game:

It was Chelsea who took the lead on 31 minutes. A corner crossed in by Dennis Wise was met by Michael Duberry who climbed the highest to head the ball into the bottom corner. Chelsea were able to take a 1-0 lead into half time.

It was Chelsea who scored the second goal of the match on 51 minutes. A fantastic long range pass over the top from Frank Leboeuf sent Gianluca Vialli through on goal. Vialli slotted the ball calmly through the legs of the out rushing Peter Schmeichel to make it 2-0 to Chelsea.

Man United pulled one back on 81 minutes through a David May header but it was to be Chelsea’s day!

Chelsea finished the 1996/97 season as F.A Cup Winners and Man United won the Premier League. This time round it’s all about Champions League qualification by finishing in the top 4! In different circumstances I’m always very satisfied with a point at Old Trafford. However, with games running out it is a must win game!
