REWIND TO SOME CLASSIC 80s & 90s HOME KITS

As Chelsea Football Club officially unveil the new home kit tomorrow for the 2019/20 season it’s a perfect time to look back on some classics from the 1980s and 1990s.

There was a time when clubs used to wear a kit for two seasons before changing it. The last home kit Chelsea had before changing each season was 2006/08.

1987/89:

Remembered for……

This kit is very much a fans favourite. However, some will remember this for Chelsea being relegated in 1988 but most will remember it for promotion back to the First Division as Champions a season later.

The Manager: Bobby Campbell

The Players: Kerry Dixon, Kevin Wilson, Gordon Durie, Pat Nevin

1989/91:

Remembered for……

Chelsea’s first season back to the top flight and of course beating Middlesbrough 1-0 at Wembley to win the Zenith Data Systems Cup in 1990.

The Players: Kerry Dixon, Kevin Wilson, Ken Monkou, Tony Dorigo

1993/94:

Remembered for……

Reaching the F.A Cup Final for the first time in 24 years. Subsequently qualifying for European Cup Winners Cup the following season.

The Manager: Glenn Hoddle

The Players: Dennis Wise, Gavin Peacock, Mark Stein, John Spencer

1995/97:

Remembered for……

Winning the F.A Cup in 1997

The Manager: Glenn Hoddle / Ruud Gullit

The Players: Gianfranco Zola, Gianluca Vialli, Dennis Wise, Roberto Di Matteo, Mark Hughes

1997/99:

Remembered for……

Winning the League Cup and European Cup Winners Cup in 1998. Also remembered for winning the European Super Cup the following season and finishing third in the Premier League whilst qualifying for the next seasons Champions League.

The Manager: Ruud Gullit / Gianluca Vialli

The Players: Gianfranco Zola, Dennis Wise, Tore Andre Flo, Gustavo Poyet, Frank Leboeuf, Marcel Desailly

Whether we like the new home kit or not let’s just hope in years to come we resemble it with much success!
