Mateo Kovacic has certainly been a figure to divide opinion in his first season at Stamford Bridge with some being really impressed by his skill and technical ability whilst on the other hand there have been those saying he is the most useless midfielder we’ve ever had. In this article I will look at whether we should look to extend Kovacic’s stay here from Real Madrid when his loan ends assuming the transfer ban dose not prevent this.

Kovacic signed for Chelsea late in the Summer 2018 transfer window on a season long loan from Real Madrid with many expecting him to flourish in a midfield three with Jorginho and N’golo Kante. Kovacic did start the season with some good performances with many thinking he’d soon get over the goal drought but now it is May and… he still hasn’t scored for Chelsea.

With 31 Premier League appearances to his name Mateo has amassed a disappointing zero goals and two assists but personally I think the midfielder is very misunderstood. He is the victim of Chelsea fans expecting him to be something he is not and there are still ways he can benefit this club in the future.

It is fair to say Kovacic is not the man we need at left centre mid but playing on the right side of the midfield three he is very impressive and also very capable of being a back up to Jorginho if need be. Seemingly happy not to start every single game Kovacic can play under high intensity pressure which is a skill N’golo Kante does not have and despite not having the defensive skills of N’golo the Croatian is far better than Loftus-Cheek and Barkley in that department. He is also the only man to play in all three midfield spots this season which shows what good squad depth he could provide and indeed Chelsea football club need competing in the Champions League next season.

Overall, I am really hopeful Chelsea can get this deal over the line. Mateo Kovacic is not the goal scoring midfielder we desire but he can definitely play this system we want to transition into. A good squad player who would not require us to break the bank, I believe Kovacic is fully deserved of another chance at Chelsea.
