REWIND: ON THIS DAY IN 1997, F.A CUP FINAL, CHELSEA 2-0 MIDDLESBROUGH

After beating Wimbledon 3-0 at Highbury in the Semi Final Ruud Gullit would lead his Chelsea team out at Wembley in the F.A Cup Final against Middlesbrough. Chelsea had finished the Premier League season in 6th position and Middlesbrough were relegated having also reached the League Cup Final.

Chelsea went into the game as clear favourites and many thought the F.A Cup was coming to Stamford Bridge ever since we came back from 2-0 down to win 4-2 against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in the 4th Round.

Grodas, Petrescu, Clarke, Leboeuf, Sinclair, Minto, Wise, Di Matteo, Newton, Hughes, Zola (Vialli 89 minutes)

Chelsea 2-0 Middlesbrough

43 seconds – We couldn’t believe our eyes! Roberto Di Matteo picked the ball up from the half way line from Dennis Wise. Di Matteo kept running and running. Mark Hughes made a run which cleared a path for Robbie to keep going. He shot from 25 yards which hit the underside of the crossbar and into the net! Chelsea were 1-0 up after 43 seconds!

83 minutes – Chelsea eventually made it 2-0 with seven minutes remaining. Started by Eddie Newton, a cross from Dan Petrescu and then a clever back heel flick from Gianfranco Zola allowed Newton to finish from close range.

Chelsea won 2-0 and the F.A Cup was coming back to Stamford Bridge!

A fantastic moment for all Chelsea fans with the club winning their first major trophy for 26 years. I was at Wembley that day as a 14 year old with my dad and brother. A ‘Blue Day’ I’ll never forget. It was just the beginning.
