Sixty-two games have been played by the Blues in all competitions this season, the South West London side also played a friendly game out in America last week, the team as a whole has several injuries and on top of all that this time next week the boys will be playing in Baku.
The Blues have had a rollercoaster season but despite the highs and many lows Maurizio Sarri’s side banked their place in the Europa League final in Baku against Arsenal. Despite the hard work paying off and them reaching a final the Chelsea boss Sarri is quite concerned heading into this game. The 60-year-old believes that the players are ‘’exhausted’’ which could be a massive issue.
Last week Chelsea flew out to America after their final away game of the Premier League season against Leicester and they beat New England 3-0. Many Chelsea fans vented their frustration about this game being played between the end of the season and the Europa League final. Although the game was for a great cause the players weren’t put first in the situation. The game resulted in one of Chelsea’s star players Ruben Loftus-Cheek being injured. This angered Blues fans a lot as Chelsea have already had many injuries so far of recent with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Toni Rudiger also being injured. Also, the game resulted in a very tired Chelsea team.
Sarri revealed that the players had three days rest after the game in America. Although this would have been well needed for the boys that knocked off days of preparation time leading up to this big final out in Baku.
Everyone knows how important this final game is next week as it is the players and manager’s only chance of getting their hands-on silverware this season. The game is huge.
Sarri has already expressed that his players are tired and this will not be helped by having to travel all the way to Baku for the final. This is something that many people are furious about especially the fans due to the expenses of the trip and distance. Furthermore, it is even more frustrating for both Arsenal and Chelsea fans as it is an all London final so it makes no sense having to travel all the way to Baku. This has resulted in the UEFA being heavily criticised for this.
Emma Hartley believes: ‘’ I thought the friendly game out in America was a lovely gesture but it wasn’t so lovely when Ruben Loftus-Cheek picked up an injury and the boys also returned home very tired from it. As a whole it’s been a very difficult season for Chelsea and it’s going to end with a very difficult Europa League final game.’’
