Recent news has come out stating that Willian and Chelsea cannot at this moment agree a new contract extension, amid Barcelona and Atletico interest.

Willian, 30, signed for Chelsea in the summer of 2013 from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Since joining Chelsea, Willian has won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and one Carabao Cup.

And if he were to leave this summer, he will be well remembered for his outstanding season during the Mourinho collapse season of 2015/16.

The 30 year old wants to stay at the West-Londoners but he is demanding a two year contract extension, whilst Chelsea are only willing to offer a one year contract extension at this moment.

Amid these contract extension talks, there has been news that Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are interested in signing Willian this summer, but Chelsea are reluctant to sell him at this moment due to the impeding transfer ban.

But the question is- are these links legit? Or is it just Willian’s agent Kia Joorabchian leaking these links out to try and put pressure on Chelsea to make them give Willian what he wants.

So with the situation up in the air still- I look at what could happen (realistically).

Scenarios

Scenario one

Willian eventually accepts Chelsea’s terms and only signs a one year contract extension.

Scenario two

A contract extension can’t be agreed between the two parties, and Willian leaves for free at the end of next season.

Scenario three

Chelsea bow into Willian’s demands, and give an over 30 year old a two year contract extension.

This would break the clubs contract structure further, due to the fact that Chelsea usually only give one year contact extensions to players who are over 30.

The clubs contract structure was broken recently, when Willian’s friend/Chelsea teammate David Luiz signed a two year contract extension with the Blues until 2021.

This wouldn’t surprise me at all if this situation were to happen, due to Willian having the better stance because of the club having the ban, meaning that they need him desperately for the upcoming season. Especially since Hazard has left to join Real Madrid.

In this scenario, Chelsea wouldn’t have intention of selling the Brazilian winger and would let him go for free after his two year contract extension ended.

Scenario four

Chelsea give Willian what he wants- two year contract extension (similar to scenario three).

However, the difference between this scenario and scenario three is that in this scenario, Chelsea only sign him up on a two year contract extension with the intention of keeping him for the upcoming season- but selling him next summer to get some money instead of letting him leave for free.

Scenario five

Chelsea sell Willian this summer.

And with a transfer ban impeding, would have to replace him within the club.

Two alternatives who could replace Willian from within the club could be one of Kenedy or Musonda. Both players have been part of the loan army, but have had a few Chelsea cameos/appearances over the years.

Kenedy has been applying his trade at Newcastle this season. Whilst Musonda has been playing at Vitesse in the Eredivisie.

There have been reports that Chelsea are looking to sell Kenedy permaenently. But could he or Musonda be given a chance by the new Chelsea manager (most likely to be Frank Lampard) to replace Willian if he were to leave.

If this scenario happens, our winger/wide choices for next season would be:

  • Callum Hudson-Odoi
  • Christian Pulisic
  • Pedro
  • Kenedy/Musonda

Scenario six

Chelsea sell Willian this summer.

And again look at alternatives to replace him from within the club.

Two other players who could do a temporary job to replace Willian is Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi.

Both players have bee part of the loan system this season, alongside the likes of Musonda and Kenedy.

Tammy has done brilliantly at Aston Villa last season, whilst Michy played at Crystal Palace last season.

Could one of Michy Batshuayi or Tammy Abraham play a wide striker role/winger role for one season to cover the job of Willian, until the transfer ban is over?

If this scenario happens, our winger/wide choices for next season would be:

  • Callum Hudson-Odoi
  • Christian Pulisic
  • Pedro
  • Abraham/Batshuayi

What I think Chelsea will do?

The club in my opinion will go with either scenario three or four.

What I would like to see happen?

I would like to see either scenario four, five or six happen.

Which scenario would you like to see happen in relation to the Willian contract saga…
