Last night, after it looked like England were going to take three points in the first game of the U21 World Cup, they somehow managed to lose the game in the last ten minutes after a red card.

At one point, England had five Chelsea academy players on the pitch, and here’s a report on how they played.

Jay Dasilva, Fikayo Tomori and the Captain Jake Clarke-Salter all started for the Lions, with Mount and Abraham featuring in the last twenty minutes.

Dasilva played in the left fullback role, and showed his potential. He definitely showed his flair and skills, as well as his ability to run past defenders when attacking.

A couple of times he was caught out on the counter attack, as well as not making he right decision with the passing, but the decision making will only improve as he plays more.

Both defenders Tomori and Clarke-Salter were composed on the ball and under the immense pressure of the French team, but it was Fikayo who truly stood out.

Anyone who watched that game would understand why Derby County fans sang last season ‘You’ll never beat Tomori!’

Although Tomori was caught out a couple of times in behind, due to his large pace and power he was able to recover extremely quickly and easily take the ball of the attacker.

Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham featured in around the 70th minute of the game.

Mount was unable to do something spectacular, especially being asked to play a role which he’s not as good as after Choudhry’s red card earlier on in the game.

He made a couple good passes and kept the flow going, however in one of his first touches he was unable to strike the ball on the edge of the box, a goal which I’m confident we would have seen scored if he had started the game.

Abraham was being asked to play in a completely different position, almost as a Left Wing Back after Boothroyd looked to play the defensive approach in the last twenty minutes, which heavily backfired.

In conclusion, although England didn’t come out victorious, Dasilva and the two centre-backs should be keeping their spots in the team, with Mount possibly being introduced in the next game as well as Tammy.
