As Fernando Torres today announced his retirement from football it’s a perfect time to look back on his Chelsea career and his top 5 moments playing for the blues. Fernando signed for Chelsea from Liverpool for £50m on the January transfer deadline day on a five and a half year contract. It still today remains the most exciting deadline day with Liverpool signing Andy Carrol from Newcastle at the same moment Torres put pen to paper with Chelsea.

For me personally having followed the blues since the 1980’s this signing was as exciting as the arrival of Ruud Gullit in the summer of 1995.

Fernando’s time at Chelsea was up and down but there’s absolutely no doubt there was some magical memorable moments along the way…….

23.04.11, First Goal For Chelsea:

Fernando’s first goal finally arrived after 14 outings. It came in a 3-0 win at home to West Ham in the Premier League. This was obviously a relief to him and all the fans. I remember the celebrations in the Matthew Harding stand as the rain poured down and the way the players reacted to him scoring that first goal. Pure relief!

24.04.12, That Goal In The Nou Camp:

Chelsea had already beaten Barcelona at home in the Champions League Semi Final 1st Leg 1-0. In the return we found ourselves 2-0 down and John Terry had already been sent off. Ramires had pulled a goal back for us with a fabulous chip. We were under serious pressure for the whole game but when a Chelsea clearance found Fernando Torres in the final minutes he picked the ball up in his own half and had a clear run on goal. Fernando rounded the goalkeeper to send Chelsea through to the Champions League final. An incredible moment no Chelsea fan will ever forget.

29.04.12, Hat trick Against QPR:

Just a few days after the heroics in Barcelona Chelsea played QPR at Stamford Bridge in a Premier League West London Derby. Chelsea ran riot winning the game 6-1. The QPR defence couldn’t cope with Fernando’s clinical finishing and direct running. It was his first hat trick since 2009.

15.05.13, The Europa League Final:

Fernando had a very successful Europa League campaign during the 2012/13 season and scored many important goals under Rafa Benitez. During the final in Amsterdam against Benfica Fernando opened the scoring on the hour mark. A clever clinical finish after holding off a defender. Chelsea went on to win 2-1 and lift the Europa League.

27.10.13, Last Minute Winner:

Another big Premier League game at home to Manchester City finished in dramatic circumstances. A last minute winner from Fernando secured three very important points. An embarrassing mix up in the City defence presented the opportunity to Fernando who took it!
