Croatian rejoins Atalanta on loan for this season

It was confirmed within the last hour that Mario Pašalić has signed a brand new contract at Chelsea which will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2022.

With the announcement of his deal, the Croatian midfielder will be also re-joining Atalanta on-loan for the second consecutive season.

The 24-year-old played an integral part in I Nerazzurri‘s best ever finish in Serie A last season as Atalanta qualified for the UEFA Champions Legaue for the very first time. Pasalic contributed 8 goals and 3 assists in 33 appearances in Serie A and it was this sort of impact that made the Coppa Italia runners-up eager for him to stay at the club for at least one more year.

There were reports a couple of weeks ago that Pasalic was expected to continue his stay at Atalanta this season, but surprisingly will only be staying on another season-long loan, despite the inclusion of a €15m buy-option that was part of the loan arrangement last year.

‘Super Mario’ joined Chelsea from Croatian side HNK Hajduk Split for £3m back in July 2014 and has had spells away from the club on loan at Elche, AS Monaco, AC Milan and Spartak Moscow, along with his current spell at Atalanta.

It will be interesting to see if Pasalic can play a key role once again for Atalanta as they play against the biggest clubs in European football in the Champions League.

Possibly even against his parent club…
