Today Chelsea Football Club announced the official departure of first team coach and club legend Gianfranco Zola. We knew what was coming when it was reported that Gianfranco turned down an ambassador role at the club for next season in the search for another coaching job.

Frank Lampard announced his backroom staff today when asked at his first press conference and as we thought Jody Morris will now be taking that position as assistant manager.

The club stated on the Official 5th Stand app;

“Everybody at Chelsea would like to thank Gianfranco for his contribution to a successful season at the Bridge and we wish him the best of luck in the next chapter of his career. He will of course always be welcome back”.

What Gianfranco achieved at Chelsea in his playing days as an individual and collectively in the team was truly fantastic. Gianfranco will always be remembered as one of Chelsea’s greatest ever players. He should now also be remembered as an assistant who came back to where he was loved and played a part in the club winning another European Trophy.

Everyone at the Chelsea Echo wishes Gianfranco all the very best for the future.
