Yesterday Arjen Robben announced to the footballing world that he was retiring from the beautiful game.

I felt this was a perfect opportunity to take you back to his Chelsea career which began in 2004. It was that summer where he signed for £12m from PSV Eindhoven.

It took Arjen until the October to make his debut after suffering an injury whilst on a pre season tour in the United States. I have to say it was certainly worth the wait! He was very influential that season on the wing where he would often swap sides during a game with Damien Duff. The two of them were absolutely electric. Unfortunately a further injury kept him on the sidelines during the later part of the season.

Chelsea went on to win our first league title in 50 years that season as well as the League Cup and Arjen was vital to the team scoring important goals and causing havoc with his blistering pace. Solo goals against Everton and the winner away to Blackburn will stay in the memory.

Arjen was again part of the team that won the Premier League during Chelsea’s Centenary 2005/06 season. This season was again marred by injuries but he still made a massive impact in the games that he did play. I personally remember being at the Valley in the September where he curled one into the top corner from outside the box. Absolutely delightful!

During Arjen’s final season at the club he won both the League Cup and F.A Cup. He had a big impact in both those finals and the beautiful cross for Didier Drogba to header in against Arsenal in Cardiff to win the League Cup will always be remembered.

There was much speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid. He eventually signed for £24.4m. Arjen was hindered by injuries at Chelsea but when he was fit he was truly amazing to watch.

When we reminisce about Arjen’s career we cannot overlook what happened in the Champions League Final in 2012. Playing for Bayern Munich he missed a penalty in extra time against Chelsea and we know how that night ended!
