Despite Chelsea being under a transfer ban this summer there are still plenty of rumours doing the rounds, with players expected to depart, contracts to be signed and more. Here’s our round-up of the paper talk and rating on how likely we think each rumour is;
Multiple outlets are reporting that Ethan Ampadu could be set to join German side RB Lepzig on loan this season. Blues’ manager Frank Lampard confirmed in a press conference earlier this week that the Welshman would be leaving on loan, but it’s currently unclear which club he’d be joining. According to The Sun and The Express, Julian Nagelsmann is keen on bringing the 18-year-old to Lepzig and is willing to offer regular first team minutes. Aston Villa, Swansea and Reading are amongst other clubs reportedly interested in acquiring the defender’s services.
Our rumour rating: 4/5. We know for certain that Ampadu will be going out on loan and Lepzig are certainly an option, however we think a move to an English side could be possible too.
Reports have broken that suggest winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is in advanced talks with Chelsea and is edging ‘closer’ to signing a new 5-year deal at the club. Mail Sport are amongst the outlets to report that Chelsea are unwilling to sell the academy graduate to Bayern Munich this summer and are set to offer the player £100K per-week in order to convince him to stay at the club for a further 5 years. This would come after the club already announced that Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount had both signed extensions in what is great news for Chelsea fans.
Our rumour rating: 4/5. We’re pretty confident on this one, not only because we want it to happen but because we think it will. Everything we have been hearing in the last few weeks back up the reports so our money is on him signing.
It is rumoured that Brazilian winger Willian could be on the move, with Barcelona interested. The Express have broken news that the Catalonian club are circling around Willian who has just a single year left on his Chelsea contract. It is believed that a £30M bid would be enough to convince The Blues to sell however the decision will be left in the hands of Frank Lampard. Willian is yet to link up with his teammates for pre-season following Brazil’s Copa America excursions and the new Chelsea boss wants to see the winger in training before making a final call on the player’s future.
Our rumour rating: 1/5. Barcelona wanted Willian last summer for £60M and now with a transfer ban it’s unlikely Chelsea will want to sell, especially for half of that price. On top of that Barcelona have just spent over £100M on Antoine Griezmann and are known to want to re-sign Neymar. Despite only having one year on his contract, it’s unlikely Chelsea will sell Willian.
The Mirror have claimed that American billionaire Todd Boehly is looking to extend his portfolio by purchasing a Premier League club, targeting both Chelsea and Spurs. The businessman owns a 20% stake in the MLB franchise LA Dodgers and is looking to expand into football. It is understood that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is open to offers but values the club at around £2.5bn. Britain’s richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already failed with a bid to takeover the blues, but could still revive his interest.
Our rumour rating: 0/5. This is extremely unlikely to happen, while it does seem Roman Abramovich is willing to sell the club it will only be for the right price. Being ‘open to offers’ and actually putting the club for sale are two different things, Roman isn’t desperate to get out of Chelsea and it’s unlikely anybody will be taking over anytime soon.
Another rumour doing the rounds was that Ashley Cole may be re-joining Chelsea, this time as part of Frank Lampard’s backroom staff. This came following the former left-back posting on his Instagram story with the caption ‘Japan here I come’ just days after the Chelsea team had departed to the same country for pre-season. It was revealed that Cole is, in-fact, set to do a marketing campaign with Yokohama potentially around Chelsea’s pre-season and was not directly linking up with Lampard’s squad. Cole is still taking his coaching badges but won’t be part of the Chelsea coaching team, yet. Lampard was quoted saying ‘As it stands at the moment there will be no more additions, I’m very happy with what I’ve got’ in regards to his backroom team.
Our rumour rater: 0/5. Well, Lampard’s rubbished this one himself and it seems Ashley Cole is just doing some marketing business in Japan rather than anything else. Calm down Blues’ fans this one isn’t happening just yet.
Kasey Palmer is being touted for a move away from Chelsea this summer by multiple outlets. Sky Sports have reported that the 22-year-old is set to join Swansea City on loan. The attacking midfielder is currently away as part of the club’s pre-season tour of Japan and that could delay any departure. Palmer is also linked with a permanent switch to Premier League newcomers Norwich City, according to Football Insider. Chelsea are apparently holding out for around £4M for the player, a fee that Norwich are likely to match.
Our rumour rater: 4.5/5. It’s pretty much guaranteed that Kasey Palmer is going to leave the club this summer. He’s been loaned out for the past three seasons and clearly isn’t part of Chelsea’s plans. The youngster hasn’t really impressed in pre-season either and with strong competition in his position it’s unlikely he’s going to stick around.
Our final rumour today is that midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko is set to leave Chelsea, with Paris Saint-Germain interested in a loan deal. According to 90 Min the French champions are keen on taking Bakayoko on a temporary basis to sure up midfield options. The Frenchman has previously admitted to L’Equipe that he’d ‘love’ to play for PSG at one point during his career. Chelsea spent £40M on the midfielder two years ago but he failed to adjust to the Premier League. After a successful loan spell at AC Milan last season, he has improved his reputation. Manchester United and Arsenal are also linked to moves.
Our rumour rater: 3/5. We think that it’s fairly likely that PSG are interested in Bakayoko after his impressive season in Milan. Having just lost Adrien Rabiot to Juventus and with Leandro Paredes failing to impress they will probably be in the market for a midfielder. The Frenchman is currently away on pre-season duties however and there’s no reason why he can’t remain at Chelsea if he impresses Frank Lampard so this ones in the balance.
Thats it for this edition of The Rumour Rater on The Chelsea Echo. With the club transfer banned there are less stories doing the rounds than usual but we will be doing this feature regularly whenever there are interesting stories in the papers.
