Ethan Ampadu has joined Bundesliga side, R.B. Leipzig on loan until the end of the season.

Prior to making the move to Germany, it was likely that the Welsh international would gain Premier League experience on loan at Aston Villa. Rivals, Cardiff City and Swansea City were also interested.

Head Coach, Frank Lampard, deemed that a loan move was in the interests of the player and Chelsea. Lampard cited that the current strength in depth in both defence and midfield influenced his decision to send Ampadu for experience elsewhere.

The 18-year-old joined the Club in the summer of 2017 from League Two side, Exeter City.

Featuring predominately in cup competitions, Ampadu made 12 appearances for the Chelsea senior side. He made his debut in the third round of the League Cup in September 2017, a 5-1 victory over Nottingham Forest. He then went on to start the next two matches in the subsequent rounds against Everton and Bournemouth respectively.

The defender was part of the under-23 contingent who made the semi finals of the EFL Trophy in 2018. Unfortunately, he missed the final of the UEFA Youth League, having suffered a broken ankle in Chelsea’s 4-2 semi-final victory over Real Madrid.

His last appearance for the Club came in the second leg of the last-32 encounter against Swedish opponents, Malmö, a 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge in February. He replaced Cesar Azpilicueta in the closing stages of the match.

From everyone at the Echo, all the best, Ethan!
