As Chelsea prepare to face Reading on Sunday as part of their pre season preparations I thought I’d take you back to a classic Premier League encounter that took place at Reading in 2006.

Chelsea Team:

Cech, Bridge, Terry, Boulahrouz, Ferreira, Mikel, Essien, Lampard, Robben, Shevchenko, Drogba

Chelsea Goal:

Ingimarsson o.g (45 +1)

Attendance:

24,026

Key Moments:

20 Seconds: Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech was caught on the head as he bravely plunged at Stephen Hunt’s feet to save. Cech could obviously not carry on and was stretchered off. Carlo Cudicini replaced him after a lengthy delay.

45+1 Minutes: A clumsy challenge from Sanko on Lampard earned him a yellow card. He was in fact punished by the resulting free kick. It was Frank Lampard who took the shot and after a couple of deflections it found it’s way in eventually being rewarded to Ingimarsson as an own goal.

62 Minutes: John Obi Mikel was sent off for a second yellow card which was in fact his full Premier League debut.

83 Minutes: Reading’s Andre Bikey was sent off for a second yellow card after a foul on Didier Drogba.

Chelsea coach Rui Faria and Reading coach Kevin Dillon were also sent to the stands after a touchline scuffle.

90 Minutes: The drama continued when Chelsea substitute goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini was left unconscious after a collision with Sanko. Carlo was stretchered off with captain John Terry finishing the game in goal.

The game finished 1-0 to Chelsea.

I certainly don’t expect Sunday’s pre season friendly to be that fiery! Fitness and game time for the players is the most important thing. A win would be an added bonus.
