With no pre season friendlies announced to be played at Stamford Bridge this summer or a Wembley Community Shield day out to be had I decided to get tickets for the Reading away game.

You could also say I just couldn’t wait any longer for the new season to start with such a buzz currently around the club with the managerial appointment of club legend Frank Lampard.

Chelsea have already had pre season tours in Ireland and Japan this summer but it was now back to the UK with a match against Championship club Reading.

Chelsea were officially allocated 2,218 tickets for the match but there was always going to be Chelsea supporters seated all over the stadium.

The journey to Reading is pretty straight forward to be fair and there were many Chelsea fans scattered around Paddington station from around late morning. Once in Reading it was clear many had made the trip with lots of Chelsea fans pouring in and out the local pubs.

A quick taxi to the ground and it was apparent many were congregated where the team coaches were due to arrive with the majority hoping to get a glimpse of super Frank! There was a quick wave but we were soon moved on.

Into the ground and like many Chelsea fans I was in the home end as I couldn’t get away tickets. With no exaggeration there were Chelsea fans all over the place. The ground wasn’t far off being full after the kick off had been delayed by fifteen minutes. When buying tickets last month I deliberately picked my seat as close to the away dugout as I could. When watching the players warm up it was quickly apparent Chelsea would be wearing last season’s yellow away kit for the match.

The Line Up:

Key moments in the match:

Reading Goal: (17 minutes) Barrett manages to cleverly lob it over Caballero.

Chelsea Goal: (22 minutes) Ross Barkley scores a beautiful free kick and puts it in the top corner.

Chelsea Goal: (42 minutes) A fine shot from outside the box from Kenedy.

2nd Half:

Reading Goal: (50 minutes) Morrison at the back post has an easy tap in after some poor marking.

Chelsea Goal: (57 minutes) A fine shot from Mason Mount made it 3-2 to Chelsea!

Chelsea Goal: (59 minutes) A poor clearance from the Reading goalkeeper falls straight to Michy Batshuyai. His touch falls to Mason Mount who scores his second of the game.

Reading Goal: (70 minutes) Baldock scores with twenty minutes remaining with a tidy finish inside the box.

FT: Reading 3-4 Chelsea

Summary:

A great pre season day out with seven goals in the game. Ross Barkley was the most impressive for me in the first half and topped it off with a fantastic goal from a free kick.

The second half started very quickly which was expected with Frank Lampard making ten changes. The stand out player had to be Mason Mount topped off with two goals.

We can take many positives from today’s game and I’m sure Frank would have learnt a lot from the players that played. Despite all of this the most important part of pre season games is game time and fitness.

A mention to our fans, absolutely fantastic! Not only our official allocation but all those not so quiet and subtle one’s all over the ground!

Up the Chels!
