It was a humbling defeat for Frank Lampard and his team as Chelsea lost 4-0 on the opening day away to Manchester United. After the match Lampard gave his thoughts and this article will summarise the comments made so we can better understand what was going through Lampard’s head.
Firstly he was asked about Jose Mourinho commenting that he should have gone with a more experienced team and that he wasn’t impressed by the performances of the likes of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham. Lampard responded by saying:
“I can’t drag players out of the medical room, these are the players that played. We were better team in 45-60 minutes. They were ruthless. I believe in the squad that we have. If we were more clinical then it could have been a different game.“
Next Frank was queried about whether this young squad he has built will need time.
“Yeah, I think in terms of the squad we couldn’t bring players in this summer. This is going to be a work in progress to a degree. The players are disappointed, but there were elements that I really liked. I want to work. I think what the fans want to see is a team that wants to play the right way.“
Lampard did touch upon the transfer ban multiple times which does indicate that he is frustrated about the incident but did also exclaim “I am not going to complain too much about that I want to work”
Following this the next question was on what positives he could take out of the performance.
“Control of the game. Intense in periods of the game, we won it back high in lots of areas whether it be Mount or Pedro. They won it in our box by being clinical. That is where we let ourselves down. It is hard to talk about it after 4-0, it sounds stupid. They took their chances.“
Multiple times Lampard spoke on Chelsea being in control but the other team just being more clinical. This was often the problem last season under Maurizio Sarri and despite success in the end it was a bumpy season so we’ll have to hope Lampard can get his squad firing sooner rather than later.
Lastly on Christian Pulisic.
“Christian is twenty years old and he’s come across from Dortmund, He’s going to be a fantastic player for the club I believe he’s got great ability, you saw little moments of his acceleration on the ball today. But I’ve got other options in them areas and I don’t want to stick Christian straight into the fire without trying to help him along the way.“
Overall I think what we can learn from Sunday’s game is that Lampard does believe in this squad and that the heavy defeat was mostly caused by individual errors that obviously will have to be stamped out. For those concerned about Christian Pulisic not playing it seems Lampard didn’t want to start him straight away and planned to use him as a spark mid game but unfortunately when he entered the game was already lost. Thankfully though, the manager does see Pulisic as a big player for the club so it shouldn’t be too long before he makes one of the wing spots his own.
