Chelsea are through to the fourth round of the FA cup as they were 2-0 victors against Nottingham forest at Stamford Bridge, the second time the Blues have faced Forest at this stage of the competition in successive years.

English duo Callum Hudson-odoi and Ross Barkley came up with the goals in this encounter as Frank Lampard made nine changes to his starting XI.

His side still contained 10 international players, with the exception of full-back Reece James, who is certain to feature in the England set-up sooner rather than later after another fine display.

So far this season, Chelsea haven’t performed well at home and results show that. It is all good beating rivals Tottenham Hotspur and arsenal away from home. But losing at the Bridge to lower league opposition against Southampton, Bournemouth and West Ham isn’t acceptable if you want to finish in the top four.

The Chelsea manager received a lot of criticism for the disapproving results in recent weeks. This FA cup tie was an opportunity for Lampard to freshen his side up and give some players more minutes they desperately need.

The team shaped up in a Lampard favourite 4-2-3-1 formation with Kovacic and Jorginho back in the double pivot role with Ross Barkley in the advanced position. The inclusion of Hudson-Odoi was greeted with a warm reception from the Chelsea fans as he looked to get his season back on track following a long injury lay off.

The 19-year-old has recently been the victim of abuse on social media after a dip in form, but he put in a brilliant display to silence his critics.

Fikayo Tomori returned in the heart of the Chelsea defence along with Andreas Christensen. A partnership Lampard will be looking at as the Chelsea boss looks for his strongest centre back pairing. The Blues haven’t been good enough in defence this season and Lampard has changed his back four around on a number of occasions.

Once the game was underway, both sets of fans were in fine voice with the games having that cup tie feeling about it. Not even ten minutes had passed in the match and the home side were in front through Hudson-Odoi who cut in from the right side and slotted a left footed shot past the keeper at his near post.

Not so long after his opening goal, Hudson-odoi was involved again as the 19-year-old assisted Ross Barkley as Chelsea raced into a two-goal lead inside 33 minutes.

It was a mirror image of the opening goal as the England winger again cut in off the right flank and fired his shot at goal where this time around was parried straight to Barkley who had all of the goal to aim at from three yards.

Barkley was making his first appearance since October and could have added to the score line – Hudson-Odoi once again involved with his superb cross being glanced towards goal by Barkley only for his header to hit the post.

Nottingham Forest battled well all afternoon without creating to much to harm Chelsea’s defence. However, the championship side had a penalty decision and goal ruled out by VAR. Their fortunes wouldn’t change during the match and the disallowed goal made it clear it wasn’t going to be their day as they struggled to break down a stubborn Chelsea team.

But in the end the blues put an end to the dismal home form as they knocked out Nottingham Forest out of the FA Cup for the second year in a row. The championship side can now turn their attention to their championship promotion push, whereas Chelsea can continue to fight for a Champions League spot.
