Champions League knockout football returns to Stamford Bridge when Chelsea host German giants Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
Chelsea fans will be well aware of the last time the two faced each other in the competition; possibly the biggest night in the club’s history.
Bayern will be looking to repeat the success they had during their last trip to London when they recorded a 7-2 demolition of Tottenham earlier in the competition.
Chelsea’s defence has been leaky at the best of times this season, and their resolve will be tested against one of Europe’s most potent attacks in Bayern.
N’Golo Kante was forced off in the first half against Manchester United with a groin injury, and could yet be a few weeks from returning to action.
Callum Hudon-Odoi is another absentee for the Blues. The youngster picked up a hamstring injury during the winter break. Lampard hinted, though, that he could return for the second leg.
The match also comes too early for Christian Pulisic, who is working his way back from an adductor injury that has sidelined him for over six weeks.
Brighter news for Chelsea is the return of Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Frank Lampard confirmed the midfielder is in the match day squad to face Bayern. Loftus-Cheek will likely have to make do with a spot on the bench as he looks to build up his sharpness before reclaiming a starting birth. The 23-year-old has been away from the first team for nearly nine months with an achilles injury.
Pedro has also been declared fit having missed the 2-1 win over Tottenham on Saturday. Chelsea could benefit from the Spaniard’s vast experience in the competition, having won the competition three times during his time at Barcelona.
Frank Lampard has a decision to make upfront. Olivier Giroud’s impressive performance against Tottenham could be enough to convince the boss he is worth of a start in this match. Tammy Abraham is fit again having struggled with an ankle injury, and could be thrown straight in given his vast contribution to the team this season.
Bayern are without defensive options Nicklas Sule and Javi Martinez. Sule has been out with a long term knee injury and might not return this season. Javi Martinez returned to training at the end of last week but this match will likely come too soon for him.
Winger Ivan Perisic is also out for Bayern with an ankle injury. There is a chance he could return for the second leg in three weeks’ time.
It is touch and go as to whether Leon Goretzka is fit enough to return for the German side. The midfielder has been out with a muscular injury and missed the win over Paderborn on Saturday.
