Another huge game awaited Frank Lampards Chelsea. Chelsea were ready to take on the league leaders Liverpool in the FA Cup. An iconic fixture in an iconic cup competition. The last time Chelsea played Liverpool in the FA cup it was back in 2012 in the final. Chelsea came out 2-1 winners. Ramires and Drogba got the goals for the blues. But this team it is a young Chelsea team, who are hungry and desperate for success. A win today would give Chelsea a huge morale boost because of some disappointing results in the past few weeks. Lampard revealed the lineup and it was a weird one. Kepa came back into the side. Billy Gilmour was brought into the side in order to show case his talent. The front 3 was very unconvincing as Willian and Pedro started due to the injuries Chelsea have had.
The first half kicked off and Stamford Bridge was buzzing. A win would mean the world to Chelsea fans as they’re desperate for a trophy in Frank Lampards first season. After a few errors at the back from Chelsea which Liverpool failed to capitalise on, Chelsea were in firm control. Willian had the best chance of the game and Adrian made a brilliant save to deny the Brazilian. A minute later Fabinho gave the ball away and Willian had a shot on goal which should have been a comfortable save for Adrian, as he managed to get a touch on the ball but it managed to find its way inside the back of the net. Chelsea took the lead and deservedly so. Liverpool had a lot of chances but they were denied by Kepa as he made a string of saves in order to keep the blues in the lead. Unfortunately Mateo Kovacic got injured and was subbed off for Mason Mount. The highlight of the first half was the performance of young Billy Gilmour. He was gliding through the midfield and everything went through him. He was making good passes and his determination to win the ball was immense. The whistle blew for HT and Chelsea were in the lead. In order to qualify for the quarter finals Chelsea still had a lot of work to do.
The second half kicked off and the next 45 minutes would be crucial to Chelsea’s season. Chelsea started the second half in fine fashion and were rewarded with a goal as Ross Barkley made a solo run from his own half and managed to score a brilliant goal as there Adrian had no chance to save it. Stamford bridge erupted as the ball hit the back of the net as Chelsea went 2-0 up against the league leaders. The blues were cruising and it could have been more, as Pedro was through on goal as he had a one v one with Adrian but it was saved as he rushed his shot. Giroud almost got the third as a brilliant pass from azpilicuetta found Giroud but Adrian made a stunning save as the ball his the bar and the Frenchmen was denied. He deserved a goal as his performance was brilliant. The full time whistle blew and One step beyond was played as Chelsea managed to put on a terrific display against the champions elect. Chelsea ended the Reds hope for the treble and managed to progress to the Quarterfinals of the FA Cup. All the boys put a solid shift in and Kepa finally got his chance and he stepped up when it mattered the most. Billy Gilmour was given Man of the match for his fantastic display. Frank Lampard has Wembley on his sight and it would be a iconic trophy to win for Lampard in his first season.
