With just ten days to go until Chelsea’s match against Aston Villa (and their long-awaited return to complete the 2019/20 season), we’ve taken a look at the Blues’ finest moments since the birth of the Premier League back in 1992.
To start us off, we’ve headed back to 2003. Known as the ‘£20m match’, Chelsea would take on Liverpool in their last match of the season – with a Champions League spot crucially up for grabs. During a financially worrying time for the Blues, a loss would cost them dearly. Therefore, their only option was to win.
However, the start of the match didn’t exactly go to plan. Liverpool went ahead within 11 minutes as Sami Hyypia scored the first of the game – but their lead didn’t last long. Just two minutes later, Marcel Desailly scored the equaliser, making it 1-1 at the Bridge. Jesper Gronkjaer then scored the winner in a 2-1 victory, marking Chelsea’s return to Europe.
