Frank Lampard’s Chelsea travel to the London Stadium tonight to face a struggling West Ham in the Premier League. The Blues are in rich vein of form having won all three of their games since the restart, including beating Manchester City in the Premier League and a 1-0 win over Leicester City to advance to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
As for their opponents tonight, they are without a win in three and have lost their opening two games since their restart. Both those fixtures ended in a 2-0 score line which has left them in a relegation battle at the bottom end of the Premier League.
In the previous meeting between the two sides, West Ham claimed victory at Stamford Bridge. A 1-0 win for the Hammers in November illustrated Chelsea’s struggles at home this season as Lampard’s side have had a lot more joy on the road.
Kepa, Azpilicueta, Zouma, Rudiger, Alonso, Jorginho, Kovacic, Mount, Pulisic, Giroud, Willian
The team picks itself in all honesty. Kepa remains in the sticks with Kurt Zouma coming in for Andreas Christensen, who is a doubt after missing Chelsea’s last match with a hip injury. Jorginho will return in the base of the midfielder three with Mason Mount and Mateo Kovacic playing either side of him.
Chelsea fans will be worrying whether star man Christian Pulisic will feature. He is a slight doubt for Wednesday’s match after coming off in the win against Leicester City with a calf injury which Lampard hopes isn’t too serious.
Fikayo Tomori and Callum Hudson-Odoi could be in contention to make the match day squad as they look to rebuild their match fitness after picking up injuries in the build-up to the restart. But, both will likely start on the bench and come on in the later parts of the second-half.
Both teams have plenty to play for with their remaining fixtures. West Ham are fighting for their Premier League safety and Chelsea looking to secure a Champions League place for next season. West Ham manager, David Moyes, will look at this game and feel that his side can hurt Chelsea’s defence, which has looked unstable at times this season. However, his side still have games to play against teams who also face a battle to stay in England’s top division. The Hammers face Norwich City, Watford and Aston Villa with Moyes anticipating valuable points can be picked up in some of these games.
For Lampard’s side they were average in the FA Cup on Sunday at Leicester. But, a telling off at half-time revitalised the Blues and eventually got the job done where they now face Manchester United in the next round at Wembley.
The Chelsea boss will be happy that his side kept a clean sheet and hope that can be the same in tonight’s match. Hopefully an in-form Christian Pulisic can continue his recent displays in this derby, if the American is fit. Basically, if Pulisic features, Chelsea win this game convincingly.
Prediction: West Ham 0-2 Chelsea
