As the race for Champions League hots up, it looks likely that it could be decided on the final day of the season. Two candidates to finish inside the top four, Chelsea and Manchester United now turn their attention away from the Premier League as they meet in the FA Cup semi-final this Sunday.
Frank Lampard will hope that his side don’t end up on the losing side against United again as they have lost on three occasions already this season. However, Lampard and this competition have a good relationship as the Blues boss has won the FA Cup on four occasions during his playing career.
The winner of this fixture will face either Arsenal in the final after they won 2-0 against Manchester City at Wembley last night. But, this fixture may see Lampard rotate his XI as he will have one eye on Wednesday night as Chelsea face league champions Liverpool, who have been poor since they won the top flight.
Kepa, James, Azpilicueta, Zouma, Rudiger, Alonso, Kovacic, Loftus-Cheek, Hudson-Odoi, Abraham, Mount
Lampard will make many changes for Sunday and I can see him switching formation to three at the back in which will restrain United’s inform strike force of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood. That is a compliment to the way United have been playing since the resumption, but, the formation change will help Chelsea’s defensive problems that have been on show this season.
Some inclusions to the starting XI are questionable but the likes of Hudson-Odoi, Loftus-Cheek and Abraham will be able to get valuable minutes as well as prove to the manager that they can contribute in the final two Premier League fixtures.
Predicted Result: Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United
The good news for Chelsea is they are one win away from capping Frank Lampard’s first season as the Blues boss with an FA Cup final appearance. The bad news is that the win will have to come against Manchester United, the team who have firmly established themselves as his nightmare opponents this season.
