Ben Chilwell’s move to Stamford Bridge means that there are three left-backs fighting for one spot. However, usually when one player arrives at the club for a hefty fee, a departure of a player in that position is likely to follow, in this case Emerson.

The Italian defender’s career at Chelsea looks to be over with former blues boss Antonio Conte eager to be reunited with Emerson at Inter Milan. When you look at the price Chelsea paid for Chilwell, £50m, selling Emerson for roughly £20m isn’t bad business at all.

With Chilwell, you immediately are getting an upgrade in the left-back spot as Emerson and Marcos Alonso haven’t convinced Frank Lampard enough to warrant a starting place when next season begins.

Football Italia have confirmed that Emerson is now free to join Inter Milan, and the Italian side are willing to meet Chelsea’s valuation of the player.

They point out that it’s even more likely that the deal will happen after Inter refused to take up the option to extend a loan spell for Cristiano Biraghi, meaning Conte will get his top left-back target.

Left-back has been a problem position at Stamford Bridge for a while, so paying some money to sign Chilwell and offloading Emerson will look like a great move if the former Leicester man lives up to expectations.

As Chelsea fans, we all hope he does.
