Chelsea are back in action this afternoon, with a friendly at Brighton & Hove Albion. This fixture will be played once more in over two weeks time in the Premier League as Brighton will also host Chelsea on September 14 for the blues first match of the 2020/21 Premier League campaign.

Today’s match is a chance for Chelsea boss Frank Lampard to see first hand how his squad is shaping up as the new season counts down.

Other than a chance to make progress on match fitness, this friendly will be the first match allowing fans back into stadiums. Unfortunately, no away fans will be allowed to attend with more than 2,500 home fans will be granted access into the AMEX stadium.

This procedure is to help test out a variety of new protocols and restrictions in place due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Chelsea Team News

The blues have a lot of catching up to do in the transfer market after a transfer ban. Nonetheless, they are exceeding the lost time and thoroughly made up for it with quality signings that needed addressing in certain areas of the pitch.

So far, Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva, and probably Kai Havertz as well. Potentially an announcement next week. Only Ziyech and Werner are expected to play in this one; Chilwell’s injured at the moment, while Sarr is set for a loan move and Silva only signed yesterday. He defiantly won’t feature after playing in last weekends Champions League final for his former club PSG.

Lampard will also be without a handful of first-team players with eight members of the squad in quarantine at the moment. Ross Barkley, Jorginho, Fikayo Tomori, Christian Pulisic (currently sidelined through injury), Mason Mount, Emerson, Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi have not reported back to pre-season training. At least Chelsea fans who watch the game live get to witness two summer signings, Ziyech & Werner, play for the first time in a Chelsea shirt.

Where to watch?

The match won’t be televised, however, the 5th Stand app and the Chelsea official website will have the match for free, as will Brighton’s own streaming service, MyAlbion Digital.

Make sure to return to ‘The Chelsea Echo’ following the conclusion of this match for a full review.
