Chelsea are on the verge of completing the signing of Edouard Mendy from Rennes. A goalkeeper was a priority in this window for the Blues with many other names being targeted.
However, Mendy emerged as a prime target last week, but now looks set to join Chelsea as an agreement of an £18m deal with Rennes edges closer.
The 28-year-old only joined Rennes from Stade Reims last summer but he impressed during his debut campaign for the club to help them finish third in Ligue 1 and secure European football this season.
Mendy’s impressive form has caught the eye of Chelsea with The Athletic’s Simon Johnson reporting that the deal could be completed in a matter of days.
Since the transfer window opened it has been evident that Frank Lampard is seeking a new goalkeeper for next season after the Chelsea boss lost faith with current Blues keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The former Athletic Bilbao shot stopper moved to Chelsea in 2018 for £71.6million and has failed to live up to that large price tag.
Last season the Spaniard struggled for form and was inevitably dropped midway through the season by Lampard for 38-year-old Willy Caballero. Lampard gave his No 1 another chance to cement his place in the team for the final run-in, but he was not impressed.
The Chelsea boss has been busy reshaping his squad this summer as the Frank has splashed out big money on players in areas of the squad that needed improving on. Winger Hakim Ziyech, striker Timo Werner, attacking midfielder Kai Havertz, centre-back Thiago Silva and left-back Ben Chilwell have all been signed so far.
Edouard Mendy looks to be the next player to move to Stamford Bridge this summer and change the fortunes in goal for Chelsea football club.
