It has been a busy transfer window for Frank Lampard & Co with a plethora of player signings confirmed at Stamford Bridge. However, with a now stretched squad, the talk now is which players should be shipped off or to go out on loan.

In recent times, a player who has been the talk of the bridge faithful is none other than 19-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi. Having fallen down the pecking order, the Chelsea winger has demanded talks take place over his future. This article will explain how Hudson-Odoi must perform this season, and how vital a player he is.

Odoi’s potential

Hudson-Odoi has been at Chelsea Football since the Under-8 level, with the 19-year-old playing a key role in the success of the Chelsea Youth. In particular during the 2016/17 season in which the Chelsea Youth team won three titles.

Odoi finally broke into the senior team in January 2018 making his debut coming on against Newcastle in an FA Cup match. After an impressive 2018 summer pre-season for The Blues, Odoi then became a regular starter for Chelsea FC.

So far this season the teenager has only registered two appearances under Lampard, most recently the 3-3 draw away at West Brom where the winger managed to score a well taken goal. With Odoi at times, he has shown what he is capable of, unafraid to take players on proving to be a handful for defenders. Injury woes have crept up on Odoi with a hamstring injury amongst others keeping the young winger out for a portion of games last season.

Lampard has openly admitted the current squad will need trimming, so a good performance from Hudson-Odoi against Barnsley was needed, and a second-half performance at the Hawthorns. Odoi certainly didn’t disappoint with the 19-year-old involved in a lot of the attacks with good signs of the level Lampard will expect him to be at.

The Verdict

With the current wingers Chelsea FC have at their disposal in Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic, it will be very hard for Callum Hudson-Odoi to get a place in the starting lineup – especially when both of these players are fully fit.

Last season, Odoi recorded 22 Premier League appearances for The Blues scoring 5 goals and creating an assist. I feel with Callum Hudson Odoi he is too talented to let go and the Wandsworth-born player should stay in Lampard’s plans for this season.

However, it is clear to all Chelsea fans that Callum may not feature as regularly this season. This may be a good thing in that Hudson-Odoi would be motivated to work hard and play his way into Lampard’s starting XI.

Whatever the case, we will soon find out what decision Frank Lampard will make, a loan move for Odoi wouldn’t necessarily be the worst thing in the world for the England International, with Bayern Munich being an attractive option.

Do you think Hudson-Odoi should remain in Frank Lampard’s plans?
