Pace. Trickery. Finesse. Christian Pulisic. Hakim Ziyech. Two of the league’s most exciting wingers, two players every Chelsea fan is eager to watch. However, with Captain America being injured for so long, and with Morocco’s Messi still yet to make his competitive debut, it begs the question, what can we expect to see from them?
Christian Pulisic, a real fan favourite from his amazing performances in the back end of last season. Unfortunately, Pulisic is still yet to make his first appearance of the 2020/21 season, however, he is tipped to make the matchday squad for the game against Crystal Palace. We saw last season how his quick feet and fabulous finishing was so instrumental to our top 4 finish as well as our FA Cup run which saw us get to the final, in which our new number 10 scored again. However this season, we can expect even more with the addition of our other super signings, like Timo Werner and Kai Havertz as well as Hakim Ziyech. Although the foursome still hasn’t played together, to see their names on the starting lineup is enough to give opposition defenders nightmares.
Last season, Pulisic provided 9 goals and 4 assists in the Premier League as well as one goal and an assist in the Champions League. He came up trumps with some very important goals, including his early equaliser in the second half against Aston Villa in our first game back after lockdown, which sparked a comeback with a Giroud goal just minutes afterwards which saw us win the game 2-1. He also provided an essential assist vs Ajax, in which he teed up Michy Batshuayi to score an equaliser in Amsterdam.
It would be an understatement to say that Christian Pulisic has filled the shoes of the former Chelsea number 10, Eden Hazard, who many are already comparing him to. Many didn’t expect the USA international to hit the ground running, in the fashion he has. However, it’s fair to say Christian most certainly hasn’t disappointed, and we are all very excited to see what more he can produce in his second season in England.
As for Hakim Ziyech, with many fans not completely aware of his traits and skills, it would be appropriate to give a brief introduction to Hakim. Ziyech signed from Dutch giants, Ajax for a fee around £33m. He has a wand of a left foot, and is a real set-piece specialist, with most Chelsea fans aware of his spectacular long-range free-kick vs Chelsea in the group stages of last years Champions league campaign. Much like Christian, he is a very gifted player in terms of his quick feet and eye for creativity, with most of his contribution cutting in from the right-hand side to provide assists towards the back post, so we could be a witness to many goals scored by Pulisic, provided by Ziyech.
Off the pitch, on social media, we have seen him strike up a relationship with players like Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson Odoi, to name just a few. Hakim is a player with great experience, aged 27 and he is a serial winner, winning multiple trophies during his 4-year spell in Amsterdam. He is welcomed with open arms to Stamford Bridge, with his qualities of opening up defences which will be of much importance, especially against teams who liked to play a low block. Something we struggled with last season.
Unfortunately, like Pulisic, we are still yet to see Hakim in the Premier League this season, however, he is expected to return to the squad this weekend so we can all look forward to that.
